And we’re off! Welcome to St Philip Howard’s Summer Camp visit to China, 2018. We boarded our Emirates flight in Manchester, where we headed to Dubai before our final destination, Beijing.

Tuesday 17th July 2018 Up bright and early for a busy day ahead, despite the fact that the electric storm during the night had kept some of us awake. Breakfast began the day with a choice of chicken sausage, pak choi, noodles and steamed red bean buns (amongst other better known breakfast options) but still, no Coco Pops in sight

Day four was a more relaxed start which began with breakfast and a 9.15 checkout from our hotel. We arrived at Beijing train station (a station with its own security, shops, cafes and restaurants)

Thursday began with the Opening Ceremony presented by Changzhou Senior High School of Jiangsu Province. The Head Boy and Girl opened the ceremony with an introduction to the audience of the school and province officials from the education department and local government.

Early start this morning, 5am! With showers and breakfast out of the way we met our class guide and buddies and boarded the coach to visit the Shanjuan Caves in Yixin, Wuxi.

Today’s lessons were a change from the usual Mandarin classes; instead, we learnt some Chinese art forms. The first lesson focused on the precision of Calligraphy, (with huge goat-hair brushes which were dipped in ink to create meaningful Chinese well-wishes). With some practice we were ready to decorate our red and gold embossed paper.

Monday began with the art of Chinese paper cutting where we were educated on the different types and uses of paper cutting; some of which even were even used for clothing and catwalk fashion, as well as, lighting and furniture. At the beginning of the lesson, we were given multi-coloured pieces of paper and shown a range of methods to create different designs.

This morning began with a Mandarin lesson where we presented our daily routine to the class based on our homework set at the end of the previous week. Most of the lesson was then focused on food and ordering in restaurants. Following this, we were taught the ‘Tian Mi Mi’ song where we listened to the clip and watched our buddies’ sing-along before attempting the song ourselves
